Polygenic influences associated with adolescent cognitive skills

چکیده
Genes play an important role in children's cognitive ability through adolescence and into adulthood. Recent advances genomics have enabled us to test the effect of various genetic predispositions on measured outcomes. Here, we leveraged summary statistics from most recent genome-wide association studies eleven mental health traits build polygenic prediction models intelligence academic skills a cohort Australian adolescent twins (N = 2335, 57% female). We show that risk scores for educational attainment, intelligence, performance explained up 10% variance 7% our cohort. Additionally, found predisposition ADHD was negatively associated with all measures schizophrenia IQ but no other measure. In this study, provide evidence vulnerability some disorders is poorer variety tests, regardless whether individual has developed disorder.

Polygenic risk of ischemic stroke is associated with cognitive ability
OBJECTIVES We investigated the correlation between polygenic risk of ischemic stroke (and its subtypes) and cognitive ability in 3 relatively healthy Scottish cohorts: the Lothian Birth Cohort 1936 (LBC1936), the Lothian Birth Cohort 1921 (LBC1921), and Generation Scotland: Scottish Family Health Study (GS). METHODS Polygenic risk scores for ischemic stroke were created in LBC1936 (n = 1005),...
متن کاملKnowledge and Skills Associated with Information Technology: Levels and Influences
In recent years, research on IT usage has increasingly focused on post-adoption usage, rather than initial acceptance of a technology regarded as new. Consistent with this recent trend, we seek to understand what factors influence employees’ ongoing IT use and processes they rely on for expanding their knowledge and skills within organizational workgroups. Based on recommendations by Jasperson,...
متن کاملSocial cognitive factors associated with mother-adolescent communication about sex.
To better understand why some mothers talk to their children about sex and others do not, we examined the role of two social cognitive variables--self-efficacy and outcome expectancies--in explaining sex-based communication. The present study was part of a larger study to test the efficacy of two HIV prevention programs for mothers and their adolescents. Mothers and their adolescents were recru...
متن کاملPolygenic risk for schizophrenia is associated with cognitive change between childhood and old age.
BACKGROUND Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have shown a polygenic component to the risk of schizophrenia. The disorder is associated with impairments in general cognitive ability that also have a substantial genetic contribution. No study has determined whether cognitive impairments can be attributed to schizophrenia's polygenic architecture using data from GWAS. METHODS Members of the...
متن کاملPolygenic risk for coronary artery disease is associated with cognitive ability in older adults.
BACKGROUND Coronary artery disease (CAD) is associated with cognitive decrements and risk of later dementia, but it is not known if shared genetic factors underlie this association. We tested whether polygenic risk for CAD was associated with cognitive ability in community-dwelling cohorts of middle-aged and older adults. METHODS Individuals from Generation Scotland: Scottish Family Health St...
